About Ilasa Bursary
The ILASA Bursary is run by ILASA, the Institute for Landscape Architecture in South Africa — a voluntary professional body registered with the South African Council for the Landscape Architectural Profession (SACLAP). ILASA's core mandate is to grow the landscape architecture profession, and this bursary is one of the ways it tries to widen access to a field that remains small and under-resourced compared with mainstream built-environment disciplines.
The fund awards a maximum of R40,000 per student and is aimed squarely at building a bigger, more diverse pipeline of qualified landscape architects, with explicit preference for students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.
Funding Details
ILASA pays up to R40,000 per student per year toward registration and tuition fees, with residence fees covered only in exceptional circumstances. Payments are made directly to the tertiary institution and other service providers rather than to the student, so the funding cannot be used outside its intended purpose.
Where You Can Study
Only four SACLAP-accredited institutions currently qualify: the University of Cape Town (UCT), the University of Pretoria (UP), the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), and the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).

Fields of Study & Who Can Apply
Applicants must be South African citizens (including naturalised citizens) studying towards an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Landscape Architecture at a SACLAP-accredited institution, with a minimum overall average of 60% in their most recent year of study.
