Astron Energy

Astron Energy is one of South Africa's leading petroleum companies, operating the country's second-largest fuel retail network and a crude oil refinery in Cape Town with a nameplate processing capacity of around 100,000 barrels a day. The company was formerly known as Chevron South Africa before being rebranded following its 2019 sale, and it remains a major employer of engineers across the chemical, electrical, mechanical, metallurgical and industrial disciplines needed to keep a refinery and fuel-distribution network running. Its bursary programme is fully funded, covering tuition, textbooks, accommodation, food, a monthly allowance, mentorship and a structured work-readiness programme for students pursuing BSc or BEng engineering degrees, and the company sets a competitive academic bar of at least 70% in the most recent full academic year.

The motivation is a direct talent pipeline: Astron Energy needs a steady supply of qualified engineers for its refining and downstream operations, and the bursary is one of its main channels for recruiting and developing them early. Recipients sign a binding bursary agreement committing to work back one year for every year of funding received; no funding is released until this contract is signed, and bursars who don't complete full-time study or later take up other paid employment risk having to repay the benefits received.
