The Caroline Mack Foundation is a Western Cape-based charitable trust focused on addressing South Africa's nursing shortage by funding nursing students who could not otherwise afford to study. The Foundation works with SD Recruitment to manage its bursary applications and recipient support.
It funds nursing bursaries specifically - not a broad spread of fields - because the shortage of qualified nurses in South African public healthcare is a well-documented crisis, and the Foundation sees targeted funding as a more effective use of its resources than a general education fund. Preference goes to applicants who can demonstrate genuine financial need.
The Foundation does not publish a formal employment work-back contract for recipients, though as with most nursing bursaries, graduates are expected to enter the healthcare workforce given the qualification itself is vocational.
