The Cisco Charitable Foundation Trust is the South African philanthropic vehicle of Cisco Systems, the US networking and IT infrastructure company. Established in 2021, it funds IT-related study through the bursary administrator StudyTrust.
Cisco deliberately targets what it calls the "missing middle" - families earning between R350,000 and R600,000 a year, too much to qualify for full funding elsewhere, but not enough to comfortably cover university costs - because this income band is where South Africa loses a disproportionate number of capable Computer Science and IT students to funding gaps rather than ability.
The bursary carries no employment work-back obligation, consistent with its framing as broad-based digital skills investment rather than a Cisco recruitment pipeline.
