The Compensation Fund is a public entity of South Africa's Department of Employment and Labour, established under the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA). It compensates employees who are injured, contract a disease, or die as a result of a workplace incident, and covers related medical costs.
Beyond compensation payouts, the Fund runs an external bursary programme aimed at helping COID beneficiaries and their dependants re-enter the workforce or become self-employed after a workplace injury or the death of a breadwinner. The bursary is funded from the Compensation Fund's own resources as part of its vocational rehabilitation mandate, rather than from general government education budgets.
Applications are administered by the Fund's Sub-Directorate: Vocational Rehabilitation, based at Compensation House in Pretoria.
