The Department of Basic Education (DBE) is the South African government department responsible for primary and secondary schooling nationwide, from curriculum policy to teacher training standards.
The DBE funds the Funza Lushaka Bursary because South Africa has a persistent shortage of qualified teachers in priority subjects like Mathematics, Science, and African languages. Rather than waiting for the market to fill these gaps, the Department funds the pipeline directly.
Funza Lushaka carries a real, binding work-back obligation: recipients must teach at a public school for the same number of years they were funded, in a subject and often a location the Department assigns rather than one the graduate necessarily chooses.
