EY funds trainee Chartered Accountants because its entire audit and advisory business depends on a steady pipeline of SAICA-registered CAs - it is, in effect, recruiting several years in advance. The firm runs two parallel bursary tracks (Academic Merit with Financial Need, and Academic Merit only) precisely so it doesn't lose strong candidates purely because their family income is too high to qualify for need-based funding elsewhere.
Recipients sign a formal training contract: at least three years of employment at EY after qualifying as a CA, served through the firm's official SAICA training programme. This is a genuine, binding work-back obligation, not a soft expectation - it is the mechanism through which EY recovers its investment in each bursar.
