FirstRand Foundation

FirstRand Foundation is the philanthropic vehicle associated with FirstRand Limited, the JSE-listed financial services group whose operating franchises include First National Bank (FNB), Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) and WesBank. Operating primarily through its FirstRand Empowerment Foundation (FREF) initiative, often in partnership with organisations such as StudyTrust and the Feenix crowdfunding platform, the Foundation channels corporate funding into education access rather than running bursaries purely as a direct graduate-recruitment pipeline for the bank itself.

The Foundation states its purpose plainly: to increase access to quality education and help address South Africa's youth unemployment crisis. Its undergraduate bursary is restricted to Black South African citizens as defined under the B-BBEE Act, from households with combined gross annual income up to R700,000, studying Commerce, Engineering, Science or Technology, and it covers tuition, accommodation, meals, learning materials, a monthly stipend and a first-year computer. Separately, FREF also funds a small number of postgraduate scholarships, worth up to R1.5 million for a Master's and R2 million for a PhD, for study at international universities.

Publicly available FirstRand Foundation material does not describe a mandatory work-back period or an obligation to join FirstRand after graduation; the bursaries are presented as educational grants rather than employer-tied contracts, though the absence of such a clause in published terms is not the same as an explicit guarantee.
