Gallagher Foundation

The Gallagher Foundation is a private philanthropic foundation founded in 2001 by Ellen and Jerry Gallagher to fund university scholarships for promising young leaders in three countries: South Africa, Mexico, and Turkey. The Foundation's first South African scholars were selected in 2002, making South Africa its longest-running country programme.

In South Africa, the Foundation funds full undergraduate scholarships exclusively at the University of Cape Town, on the belief that well-educated, values-driven leaders are key to a country's future peace and prosperity. Since 2002, the South African programme has supported more than 240 graduated scholars with a 90% programme completion rate.

Note for site editors: the Gallagher Foundation is not connected to the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation (a separate, well-known South African investment-linked foundation focused on entrepreneurship), nor to the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand (a Hosken Consolidated Investments property). The shared surname is coincidental.
