GrandWest Casino

GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World is a large casino, hotel and entertainment complex in Goodwood, Cape Town, owned and operated by Sun International, one of Africa's largest hospitality, gaming and leisure groups. Opened in 2000, GrandWest is one of Sun International's flagship properties and among the largest gaming and entertainment destinations in South Africa, combining a casino floor with cinemas, an ice rink, restaurants and event venues.

GrandWest established its bursary fund in 2007 specifically to help students from previously disadvantaged communities in the Western Cape access tertiary study, framing it as a community-investment response to the socio-economic exclusion the surrounding communities have historically faced — consistent with the gaming industry's regulatory and licensing obligations to demonstrate local social investment. The bursary funds undergraduate study in fields such as Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Finance, HR, Marketing, and Tourism and Hospitality, restricted to students registered at the University of Cape Town, University of the Western Cape, Stellenbosch University or Cape Peninsula University of Technology, with applications made directly to GrandWest by email.

The GrandWest bursary does not carry a work-back or repayment obligation; instead of binding recipients to future employment, the fund requires bursars to complete 40 hours of community service and to reapply each year based on maintaining a satisfactory academic record — an approach that ties continued funding to community contribution and academic performance rather than to employment at GrandWest or Sun International.
