Kropz Elandsfontein

Kropz Elandsfontein (Pty) Ltd is a South African rock-phosphate mining and processing company and the operating subsidiary through which Kropz plc, an AIM-listed exploration and mine-development group, runs its flagship Elandsfontein mine on South Africa's West Coast, roughly 95 kilometres north-north-west of Cape Town in the Hopefield area of the Saldanha Bay Municipality. Elandsfontein hosts South Africa's second-largest known phosphate rock deposit, and its ore is notable for being low in cadmium and other heavy metals, which allows Kropz to market its output as an input for fertilisers that support food security and more sustainable agriculture. Kropz is majority owned by African Rainbow Capital, and has invested well over a hundred million US dollars into exploration, bulk sampling, feasibility work, and the construction of the mine, processing plant and associated infrastructure, including dedicated logistics arrangements through the deepwater Port of Saldanha.

Kropz funds its bursary programme as part of the social and labour plan (SLP) commitments that South African mining companies are legally required to make to the communities around their operations under the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, administered in this case through a dedicated SLP and Stakeholder Engagement function rather than a general corporate social-investment budget. The bursary is explicitly restricted to residents of the Saldanha Bay Municipal area, the community in whose backyard the mine operates, and the eligible fields of study, spanning mechanical, electrical, chemical and metallurgical engineering, mining, geology, environmental science, health and safety management and accounting, mirror the technical and professional disciplines Kropz itself needs to staff a phosphate mine and processing plant.
