The Mandela Institute for Development Studies (MINDS) is a continental, Pan-African non-profit institute focused on building a network of young African leaders equipped to tackle the continent's development challenges. It takes its name and founding inspiration from Nelson Mandela's vision of an integrated, self-reliant Africa.
Through its Scholarship Programme for Leadership Development, launched in 2017, MINDS funds African students to complete Honours or Master's study in a Sub-Saharan African country other than their own, deliberately building cross-border academic and professional networks rather than funding study at home. MINDS does not prescribe a specific field of study, focusing instead on leadership potential and academic merit.
