National Treasury

National Treasury is the South African government department responsible for managing the country's public finances, budget process, and economic policy. Its bursary scheme is one of the more selective government-funded programmes, restricted to a narrow set of finance-related fields.

Treasury funds Accounting, Economics, Finance, and Law students specifically because it needs a continuous pipeline of specialist skills to staff its own divisions - budget analysis, public finance management, tax policy, and legal services - roles the private sector often competes hard to poach from government.

Recipients are expected to work for National Treasury after graduating, in line with standard public-service bursary practice, though the exact contract terms are confirmed once an offer is made.
