The Northern Cape Provincial Government is the provincial administration for South Africa's largest but least populated province. Its bursary scheme, run through the Office of the Premier, funds residents pursuing scarce-skills qualifications the province needs to grow its own economy and public service.
The province funds STEM and scarce-skills study specifically because the Northern Cape has struggled historically to attract and retain skilled professionals given its size and remoteness - training its own residents, who are more likely to return and stay, is a more sustainable strategy than trying to recruit graduates from elsewhere.
There is no formally published employment work-back contract attached to the bursary, though as with most provincial government bursaries, recipients are generally expected to consider public service opportunities within the province after graduating.
