Roche South Africa

Roche South Africa is the local operation of Roche, the Swiss pharmaceuticals and diagnostics group, employing more than 400 people across its two South African divisions. Globally, Roche positions itself as a leader in personalised healthcare, combining pharmaceutical and diagnostic capabilities to advance treatment and disease detection.

The company funds bursaries in science, technology, quality assurance and related fields because it needs a pipeline of technically skilled graduates for both its pharmaceutical and diagnostic operations, and frames the programme as part of its broader contribution to improving healthcare outcomes in South Africa. Support is comprehensive — covering registration and tuition fees, textbooks, accommodation, meals, a laptop and other necessities — and is paired with ongoing psycho-social support and light-touch mentoring intended to help recipients complete their studies and transition into the workplace.

Unlike many of the bursaries covered on this site, Roche's has a clearly stated work-back obligation: recipients are required to work for Roche Diagnostics for a period matching every year of funding they received, or to repay the bursary amount with interest, and must accept employment offers made by the company after graduation. This makes the Roche bursary a bonded scheme rather than a no-strings grant.
