Royal Bafokeng Institute (RBI)

The Royal Bafokeng Institute (RBI) is the education and development arm of the Royal Bafokeng Nation in the North West province, funded largely through the Nation's platinum mining royalties.

RBI runs a Student Loan rather than a bursary because it is designed to be a sustainable, revolving fund - money repaid by earlier recipients goes on to fund the next generation of Bafokeng Nation students, rather than being a one-off grant paid out and never recovered. That structure is why membership of the Royal Bafokeng Nation, not just South African citizenship, is a hard eligibility requirement.

Because it is a loan, not a bursary, recipients are expected to repay the funding after completing their studies and entering employment - applicants should treat it as a financing option to plan around, not free funding.
