Safripol

Safripol is South Africa's leading local producer of polyethylene and polypropylene plastics, with polyethylene production based in Sasolburg in the Free State and polypropylene production in Durban, South Africa's main petrochemical hub. The company supplies plastic raw material — the pellets and resins used to manufacture packaging, pipes, automotive parts, and countless other manufactured goods — to converters and manufacturers across the country and the region, and maintains a commercial head office in Bryanston, Johannesburg.

Safripol funds bursaries in Chemical, Electrical, Instrumentation, and Mechanical Engineering, reflecting the highly technical, plant-based nature of its own operations: as a polymer manufacturer it depends on a continuous pipeline of process and plant engineers to keep its Sasolburg and Durban facilities running safely and efficiently, and the local pool of qualified graduates in these fields is limited. Alongside its broader engineering bursaries, the company also runs a dedicated Community Bursary Programme for young people from Wentworth, Jacobs and Bluff — communities adjoining its Durban operations — reflecting a stated commitment to the areas most directly affected by, and neighbouring, its industrial activity.

Safripol's bursaries carry an explicit work-back obligation: on completing their studies, bursars are required to take up employment with Safripol for a period equivalent to the number of years they were funded, and may also be expected to complete vacation work, internships, or community outreach with the company during their studies. This is a bonded arrangement rather than a no-strings grant.
