SANParks

South African National Parks (SANParks) is the state entity responsible for managing South Africa's system of national parks, including Kruger, Table Mountain, and eighteen other protected areas covering millions of hectares of the country's most significant natural and cultural heritage.

SANParks funds an External Bursary Programme specifically for young people from communities living adjacent to its national parks, reflecting the organisation's approach to conservation as something that has to benefit neighbouring communities directly, not just protect land at arm's length. Because many of these communities sit in rural, historically under-resourced parts of the country, the bursary doubles as a genuine economic development tool alongside its role in building SANParks' own future workforce.

The programme sets a household income cap and requires applicants to already live near a national park, rather than opening funding to any South African student - a deliberate choice that keeps the benefit concentrated in the communities SANParks' conservation work most directly affects.
