Sappi

Sappi is a global producer of wood-fibre-based products, including dissolving wood pulp, paper and packaging materials, with its head office in Rosebank, Johannesburg, and forestry plantations and pulp and paper mills operating across South Africa. As one of the country's major industrial employers and a significant private forestry landholder, Sappi runs operations that depend on a continuous supply of process, mechanical, chemical and electrical engineers as well as qualified foresters — specialist fields with relatively few dedicated training pipelines in South Africa.

Sappi's undergraduate bursary programme is targeted at engineering and forestry science students aged 17 to 25, with the value of funding (tuition, prescribed textbooks, accommodation and a living allowance) scaled to household income. Bursars gain structured, paid vacation work placements in July and December of each year of study, giving them practical mill or plantation exposure well before graduation, and successful bursars are typically offered entry into Sappi's Engineer-in-Training programme once they qualify.

Publicly available information about Sappi's bursary does not describe a fixed, contractual work-back period of the kind seen at some other companies. Instead, the vacation-work structure and the Engineer-in-Training pathway function as an informal but deliberate route into employment, giving Sappi first access to bursars it has already trained without stating a formally binding number of committed years.
