South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA)

The South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA) is a professional accountancy organisation representing more than 15,000 accredited Professional Accountants (SA) across practice, commerce, industry, academia and the public sector. Its mandate covers setting and maintaining the standards for its professional designation, accrediting qualifying routes such as its Project Achiever traineeship programme, providing continuing professional development, and advocating for the accounting profession in the public interest.

SAIPA funds bursaries through its Scholarship Programme, which each year awards a small number of fully funded scholarships, including one named in memory of the late Prof Rashied Small, to academically strong students from financially constrained backgrounds who want to study a full-time BCom Accounting degree at a public university. The scholarship covers tuition, textbooks, accommodation where required and a monthly allowance, and applicants who pass the initial screening must sit a qualifying exam and attend a panel interview. SAIPA's motivation is squarely about widening entry into the accounting profession it represents and building the pipeline of qualified accountants South Africa needs. Publicly available SAIPA material does not set out a binding work-back or employment obligation for scholarship recipients, though the scholarship is closely linked to SAIPA's own traineeship and designation pathway, which recipients are well placed to pursue afterward.
