The South African Journal on Human Rights (SAJHR) is a peer-reviewed public law journal founded in 1985 by the Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) at the University of the Witwatersrand's School of Law. It is regarded as one of South Africa's leading public law journals, publishing constitutional, human rights and justice-focused legal scholarship for an international readership, and has been co-published with Taylor & Francis since 2016.
Through its postgraduate top-up bursary, the SAJHR editorial team supports a small number of LLM students each year who are researching constitutional, human rights or justice-related legal topics, with a particular focus on academically strong candidates who demonstrate financial need. The bursary is administered directly by the journal's Managing Editor rather than through a separate foundation.
Because the bursary is a "top-up," it is designed to supplement other funding rather than cover a student's full costs, reflecting the journal's limited, targeted role in postgraduate legal education funding.
