South African National Society (SANS)

The South African National Society (SANS) is a heritage organisation dedicated to "cultivating an appreciation for South Africa's heritage," active for over a century and based in Durban. It runs regular meetings, a heritage library, and cultural and historical preservation initiatives, with a particular focus on KwaZulu-Natal.

Among its programmes, SANS administers the Killie Campbell Bursary, named for Dr Killie Campbell (1881-1965), whose extensive collection of Africana books, art, photographs and oral histories was bequeathed to the University of KwaZulu-Natal and now forms the Killie Campbell Africana Library. The bursary channels SANS's heritage mission into direct support for postgraduate historical research.

The Society is run by a volunteer committee and secretary, and bursary decisions are made by a dedicated selection committee that reviews applications and, where needed, interviews candidates before awards are announced at a SANS meeting.
