The South African Nursery Association (SANA) is the representative industry body for plant nurseries and the wider ornamental horticulture and landscaping sector in South Africa, describing itself as a driving force in the country's green industry since 1947. Rather than running commercial operations of its own, SANA exists to set professional standards, support training and represent the interests of its member nurseries, garden centres, landscapers and growers across the country.
SANA's bursary is aimed at students studying horticulture or landscaping at an accredited South African tertiary institution, covering tuition fees for the current academic year, paid directly to the institution, and including free SANA student membership with access to industry publications and trade fairs. Applicants must have completed their first academic year with a minimum 60% average. The bursary exists because the ornamental horticulture sector faces the same skills-pipeline problem as agriculture more broadly: too few graduates entering horticultural science and landscape design to replace an ageing generation of nursery professionals and growers.
Because SANA is a membership association representing an entire industry rather than a single employer, no work-back or fixed employment obligation applies to its bursars. The funding is intended to grow the overall pool of qualified horticulturists available to the sector's many member businesses, not to bind recipients to any one company after graduation.
