The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is the provincial government department responsible for public healthcare delivery across the Western Cape, including hospitals, clinics, and emergency medical services. The Department funds Health Science students because it, like every provincial health department in South Africa, faces a persistent shortage of doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals in the public sector. Rather than competing for graduates on the open market, it funds their training directly in exchange for a guaranteed period of service.
The work-back obligation here is real and legally binding: recipients sign a bursary contract, and after completing compulsory community service, they must apply for a post within the Department and work back the remaining contracted years.
