Cheadle Thompson & Haysom Inc is a boutique South African law firm founded in 1979 by three legal academics from the University of the Witwatersrand, with offices in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Built originally as a human rights and labour law practice, it has grown into a full-service firm spanning more than a dozen practice areas including administrative, constitutional, competition, municipal and public sector law, while remaining particularly well known for representing trade unions in collective bargaining and employment disputes.
The firm funds the Bheki Mlangeni Memorial Scholarship in memory of Bhekisizwe Godfrey Mlangeni, a colleague who joined the firm from Wits University in January 1989 as an aspiring lawyer and community activist from an impoverished background. The scholarship is awarded to final-year LLB students at the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of the Western Cape, reflecting the firm's own history and its measurable transformation commitments as a B-BBEE Level 1 practice with more than 55% Black directorship, over 30% women directors and roughly 70% Black professional staff, and its deliberate, limited annual intake of candidate attorneys built around structured training.
Scholarship recipients may be required to take part in a vacation work programme at the firm, a modest but real practical work component rather than a full bonded employment obligation after admission.
