South African National Accreditation System (SANAS)

The South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) is the country's single national accreditation body, established in 1996 and operating under the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic). Its statutory role is to accredit and monitor testing and calibration laboratories, certification bodies, inspection bodies, proficiency-testing providers and good-laboratory-practice facilities against internationally recognised criteria, a function that underpins the credibility of South African exports, regulatory testing and quality infrastructure. SANAS is a full member of the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and the International Accreditation Forum (IAF), giving its accreditation decisions international standing.

As a public entity with a technical, standards-based mandate, SANAS funds bursaries to build the specialised metrology, testing and quality-assurance skills base that the country's conformity-assessment sector depends on, rather than as conventional corporate social investment. Its External Bursary Programme is open to South African citizens across all fields of study, covering tuition only: up to R50,000 for National Diploma or Degree study and up to R70,000 for Honours or Postgraduate Diploma study at accredited institutions.
